Even though I hippopotaMUST leave, I don't think I'm ready to say goodbye to TZ quite yet. Thank you, sincerely, to all the folks who helped make this summer in Nyamuswa happen. I'll be back soon enough ☺️

A Short Stay in the Serengeti, Day 2‼️

It's leopHARD to believe how much we saw today!
- At least 28 lions
- 2 leopards (after two the day before!)
- Over 200 hippos (I lost count after 150, and I was barely halfway through)
- 1 momma cheetah and her 4 cubs
- 1 unicorn (a one-horned Eland Antelope)
- Tons of antelope, zebras, giraffes, elephants, a handful of buffalo, some beautiful birds and so much more!

It almost makes me want to sing...

Stank up the Seine as they fell asleep... 😴💩

...in all reality, hippopotamus poop smells surprisingly similar to cow poop, which I guess I could have figured. Well, you learn something new every day 🤷‍♂️

Also, shout out to my peers in last semester's BIO-195 infectious diseases class at Grinnell. I got bit by a tsetse fly for the first (and second, and third, and fourth) time, so hopefully I don't get trypanosomiasis! 🪰

A Short Stay in the Serengeti, Day 1‼️

I had the chance to see some ZEBRunbelievable sights, and I genuinely feel so grateful for the opportunity to, considering the main goal here was just getting me to Arusha so I can catch a flight in a few days. When your boss runs both an NGO and a safari company, I guess this sort of serendipity is just an option (thank you, Brian, for arranging all of this---I am truly so appreciative).

Although leaving Nyamuswa (the village where I've been staying these past two months) was nearly impossible---more on that in an upcoming post---taking the time to decompress and explore here has been buffaLOVELY. I've seen more wazungu today than I have in over two and a half months, so that's still a bit jarring, but we're getting there.

I'd be LION if I said this wasn't the best way to close out my time in Tanzania. Thank you again to everyone who helped make it happen 🇹🇿🫡

I climbed another mountain! 🌄🤠⛰️🦎🏞

Just east of the town of Bunda lies Balili mountain, and let me be the first to tell you, it was BaREALLY fun to explore! Though it was lizARDUOUS at times, the view from that high up was well worth the effort. Between the views of Bunda town, Balili village, Lake Victoria, and Serengeti National Park, my breath was truly taken away (and definitely not because of the altitude...). I'm just glad our little troupe was VICTORIA-ous in our efforts to climb a couple of its peaks!

With just a week and change left here in Tanzania, I'm glad to put such an incredible cap on some of my more adventurous outings. But who knows, there's still time, maybe I'll MOUNT AINother expedition yet...

Jul-I'VE been busy! 🌞

It's been an incredible few weeks as of late, and Nyamuswa is really getting to feel like home. I've got three weeks left here in Tanzania, so I'm just trying to make the most of it! Tonight that meant playing barefoot soccer with some younger friends ⚽️🧘🏼‍♂️ (channeling my inner Haaland after some of the kids suggested we look alike 🇳🇴)

There's NOrWAY the time has flown this fast, but hey, that's just how summer tends to go. Here's to the last few weeks!

Chamriho Mountain! ⛰️🏕🧱🥾🌞

I had the incredible opportunity to learn the local history of this site from the Sanzati village chairperson, along with my coworker Benard. I'm immensely grateful for the experience, especially for the chance to hear about the Ikizu traditions and legends, passed down accounts of horrific German colonialism (the remnants of a German fort, built in the late 1800s, is the stone structure pictured above), and above all, what this mountain truly means to the people of Sanzati who claim it.

It was quite the FORTuitous encounter, and I'll be ChamriHOLDING onto these memories for a long time to come. From the SanzaTREMENDOUS views, to the well-preserved oral history, it was well worth the visit.

In next week's column for the Hampton Chronicle, I intend on fleshing out this story and recounting the lore as it was told to me. You can read it (once it's published) by visiting my website at the link in my bio!
